Jhuma Biswa: Journey in the Printing Press Business | Challenges of a Male-Dominated Industry

Having completed my Master’s in Business Administration and a degree in Advertisement and Sales Management, I naturally stepped into a sales role at the frontline of an advertising agency at Nehru Place. This experience gave me invaluable insights into sales management, customer-centricity, time management, and the importance of the price-value proposition, setting a strong foundation for my future endeavors.

A Twist of Fate: Introduction to the Printing Press

My second assignment, however, was a turning point in my career. I found myself in Sector 3, Noida, where I was introduced to my mentor and the world of the printing press. This was not just any printing press—it was a double-coloured offset print press, primarily serving the pharmaceuticals industry. Little did I know that this would be my tryst with destiny.

Running a printing press was a different ball game. It was a male-dominated business that came with its own set of challenges. From managing technical operations to negotiating with clients, I quickly realized that the demand for print was deeply tied to marketing communications, especially at a time when social media had not yet taken off.

Adapting to Change: The Rise of Digital Printing

During one of my customer interactions, I first heard the term “digital print,” and it sparked my imagination. I realized that while traditional printing was struggling to stay afloat, digital printing was the future. The industry was evolving, and I saw an opportunity to innovate and bring in new technologies to keep the business competitive.

Despite being in a male-dominated environment, I faced the struggles head-on. Whether it was gaining the trust of clients or handling the workforce, I had to prove myself every step of the way. The challenge was not only about maintaining the business but also about driving it forward in a rapidly changing industry. By focusing on quality, efficiency, and evolving client needs, I was able to push the boundaries and introduce fresh strategies to keep the printing press thriving.

Through resilience and a customer-first approach, I navigated the tough terrain, ensuring that the business did not just survive but adapted to the changing market dynamics. This experience taught me not only about the intricacies of running a printing press but also about the strength needed to thrive in an industry where the odds weren’t always in my favor.
